Scar Revision Surgery
Scar Revision aims to minimize the appearance of scars through topical treatments to surgical procedures, depending on the size and depth of scars. Although a scar may not be completely erased, a scar revision may help restore the skin’s color and texture. Some people choose to erase scars on their body for self esteem. Others choose to have scar revision to help them with normal body movements. Scar revision may be done in any part of the body.
Types of Scars
Surface Irregularities and Discoloration
These kinds of scars usually come from a skin disorder such as acne or chicken pox. These scars don't normally impair bodily functions and may be treated through laser skin resurfacing methods or minor surgical procedures.
Hypertrophic Scars
These are scars that develop after a wound. This usually appears with noticeable hyperpigmentation (darker than skin color) or hypo-pigmentation (lighter than skin color).
Keloids
Keloids usually appear on the ears, face, neck, shoulders, or chest. They are found on edges of wounds and may be itchy or painful.
Contractures
This scar usually results from a burn. It may cause the skin to be stretched and restrict bodily movement if it is located on the hands, elbow, neck, feet, or knees.
When should you get a Scar Revision Surgery?
If a scar is already limiting your normal body movements and functions, then a Scar Revision Surgery may be for you. Scars may also bother you and cause you to have low self-esteem. Like in any aesthetic surgery, undergoing this kind of procedure is a life-impacting procedure. Ask your doctor about the possible risk and the specific procedure you have to take for your scar.
